English: This oil painting by Albert Robinson captures the industrial environment of the Canadian Vickers shipyard in Montreal. The freighters' bows dwarf the workers, while cranes hoist steel plates for the ships' hulls into place. During the First World War, Canadian Vickers, one of the largest shipyards in Canada, built both merchant ships like those seen here, and naval vessels like motor launches and submarines. Painted by Albert Robinson in 1919. This painting of shipbuilding at the Canadian Vickers shipyard in Montréal, Quebec, is by Albert Robinson. The Canadian War Memorials Fund made Robinson an official war artist on the recommendation of his friend, future Group of Seven member and official war artist A. Y. Jackson. Robinson was denied access to the shipyard at first but once in, he proved his friend right. Robinson was, indeed, artist enough to achieve something quite above the average. |
