Summary

Description
English: This stone marks the site of the English army encampment on the eve of the battle of Pinkie in 1547. Edward Seymour, bearing the title Protector Somerset, led an English army with naval support into Scotland in a further attempt to force the Regent Arran and the Scottish nobility to agree to the marriage of the four-year old Mary, Queen of Scots, to the nine-year old King Edward VI of England. The battle turned into a disastrous defeat for the Scots, but the English did not press home the victory. In the following summer the Scottish Parliament agreed that the infant Queen should sail for France to marry the French Dauphin instead.
