Summary
| Description | The U.S. Navy ocean escort USS Patterson (DE-1061) underway in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island (USA), 27 August 1970. The photo illustrates the original Knox-class frigate, its armament consiting only of a single 127 mm/54 gun and an ASROC-launcher (earning nicknames like "MacNamara's folly"). A FRAM I-modernized Gearing-class destroyer was smaller but was armed with four 127 mm/38 guns and carried the QH-50 DASH drone. The Knox-class frigates were later upgraded and the (never used) DASH-landing deck was converted to accomodate the LAMPS I-helicopters. A Mk 25 BPDMS Sea Sparrow-launcher was added aft, later replaced by a Phalanx CIWS. | |||
