Bombardment of Grey Town
From Warlike
Greytown was a contested port on the Atlantic Coast of Central America. Nicaragua regarded it as its own former Caribbean outlet, while Britain maintained that it was always part of Mosquitia. In 1852, the protectorate granted self-governing autonomy to the tiny port. It was later bombarded and burned to the ground on July 13, 1854 by the US Navy sloop-of-war USS Cyane. Although this incident was historically minor, it had a major impact on American foreign policy.
